Tâigael: Stories from Taiwanese & Gaelic turned one year old on 1st July, and what a year it has been. The book has received some amazing coverage and support, and we are so grateful for everyone who has read the book and listened to the stories so far.
It was such an honour to work with four brilliant writers: Naomi Sím and Kiú-kiong from Taiwan, our two Scottish writers Lisa MacDonald and Elissa Hunter-Dorans and to work with our brilliant Mandarin translator Shengchi Hsu.
This kind of project truly takes a lot of teamwork and effort. And we are also grateful to the endorsers for the book who included Li Yuan 李遠, screenwriter and Taiwan Minister for Culture, Lin Chia-lung 林佳龍, Taiwan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Michelle Kuo, author of Reading With Patrick, writer Garry MacKenzie, Wen Ruoqiao 温若喬 translator and poet, Martin MacIntyre, author, Bàrd and storyteller and last, but definitely not least, the poet and translator Colin Bramwell.
TaiwanPlus News is the premier international media platform providing English-language news and entertainment from Taiwan, and we were absolutely delighted in their interest in the book and their three episodes of Zoom In Zoom Out, featuring Tâigael: Stories from Taiwanese & Gaelic. You can see the first episode here, the second here and the third here.
The book was also covered in a special edition of Taiwan Insight, the publication of the Taiwan Research Hub hosted by the University of Nottingham. You can read the four excellent essays (even if we do say so ourselves) here.
Thank you to the renowned academic blog Language Log for featuring the book and Glossika for running an article written by Will Buckingham.
Radio International Taiwan also did an interview with Will, which you can listen to here.
Of course, all of this has been made possible with funding from the Scottish Government’s Scottish Connections Fund and Creative Scotland.
Not read the book yet? Then head to the bookshop and grab your copy.
We wanted these stories to be as accessible as possible, and so you can listen to the stories for FREE here - https://taigael.com/stories/.
We’ve not mentioned the countless events, chance meetings and other global connections that have emerged from editing and publishing this book - there’s just not enough space here - but it is safe to say that this year has been incredibly busy, rich and rewarding. We are so proud to have brought this book into the world.
Thank you to everyone who has been a part of its amazing journey so far.
